Progress Report 2 - May 1999

While we were hoping to have this out a couple weeks ago, last minute additions make our postponement worth while.

We have several new guests to announce as well as updates for our planned events. We also have some new additions to the schedule.

But before we jump into any of that, we have some important news items to mention. Starting with...
 

PRE-REG EXTENDED TO MAY 22!

That's right, it's not too late to get your convention membership at the $35 rate. See the enclosed flyer for details and form to send in.

Rates after May 22 will go to $45 for the full weekend. One day memberships will be available at the door only for $25 per day. Kids rates will also apply at the door. Those 7 years and younger are free and those between 8 and 12 years old will be half price.

Friday evening's party and concert featuring Bill Mumy which starts at 8 PM will have a special "evening rate" of $5 per person.
 

NEW GUESTS:

We've had a lot of additions to our guest list since Progress Report One was mailed back at the end of February. We like to highlight just a few our additions. See the enclosed flyer for a full list and watch the web site for last minute additions!

Mira Furlan and Goran Gajic - This year we are proud to welcome both Mira and Goran to AgamemCon for their first appearance at our convention. Mira played Delenn on Babylon 5 from the pilot to Sleeping in Light. Goran will be a part of our Directors Series of panels having directed the Babylon 5 episode And All My Dreams, Torn Asunder. One of the best episodes of the fifth season, in my humble opinion.

Peter Jurasik - Our most recent addition to the roster, Peter played Londo Mollari through all five seasons of Babylon 5. He has recently worked on the television show, Sliders, for the Sci-Fi Channel. Peter also has a book published, Diplomatic Act, written with William H. Keith, Jr.

Peter Woodward - "Galen" from A Call to Arms and Crusade will be making one of his first convention appearances at AgamemCon.

David Allen Brooks - One of the first things I would like to mention is Mr. Brooks is not dead. Due to some bad information, the Internet Movie Data Base has him confused with an 83 year-old David Brooks who recently died. The David Allen Brooks we have attending AgamemCon plays Max Eilerson on Crusade. We look forward to having the very alive David Brooks at our convention.

John Vickery - It's beginning to look like it's All Minbari, All the Time. Mr. Vickery played "Neroon" on Babylon 5 until his character's untimely death in Moments of Transition.

Robin Atkin Downes - Robin returns for his second appearance at AgamemCon. He played the character, Byron, on Babylon 5 in fifth season.

Jeff Corey - Mr. Corey played "Justin", the man in the middle, in Babylon 5's episode Z'Ha'Dum.

AgamemCon has one deletion to make to this year's guest line up. Tony Dow, director of several Babylon 5 episodes as well as Crusade, will not be able to attend the convention due to his directing schedule.
 

EVENTS:

This year we have a lot of special events planed for the course of the weekend. Here are some highlights of what we have in store.

Charity Auction: This year our charity auction proceeds will be benefitting the Penny Lane Group Home for Troubled and Abused Children. This charity just kept coming up when our guests were asked where they would like to see the money go. Kim Ferry, Hair and Make-up Artist for Babylon 5, Crusade, and the X-Files will be doing a hair demonstration again and will be auctioning off the opportunity to be done up in alien hair. Kim Holly, Costume Supervisor for Babylon 5 and Crusade will be bringing along some of the costumes from one of the most important episodes of Babylon 5, Sleeping in Light. She will be auctioning off the opportunity to dress up in one of the costumes she will be bringing along. We don't know what Kim is bringing, but every year she has brought along a lot of really cool costumes from the set. It's always been a highlight of AgamemCon to see the costumes actually used in the show up close and personal. Also included in our auction are some autographed CCG's from the fine folks at Precedence Publishing, the makers of the Babylon 5 Collectable Card Game. These are just a few of our items we will be auctioning off for the Penny Lane charity.

Bill Mumy Concert: Don't forget to check out Friday night's concert with Bill Mumy. Bill has his band together, and he is ready to rock the roof right off the convention center. Have a friend who really wants to see Bill rock, but isn't into the whole convention scene? We will be offering a special "concert only" ticket for $5.00 the day of the concert. This ticket will only be good for the Friday night activities. What better way to drag your long-suffering friends to a con without having all the fuss of explaining the intricate details and rituals of "con going"? Everyone likes to rock and roll once in a while. The Guest Reception begins at 8 PM and will be hosted by Jack Stauffer, Bojay, of Battlestar Galactica fame.

Science Fiction Masquerade!
Looking for a stage to show off your imagination? AgamemCon is the place. There will be a full Science Fiction / Fantasy Masquerade contest Saturday night in the main ballroom at 8 P.M.

We will have a full sized 24 by 24 foot stage, lighting and sound. Costumes worn during the day may be entered. The contest will be judged on the division system of Novice, Journeyman and Master. There will be an optional completion to recognize your workmanship skills. Costumes can be original or re-creation, Babylon 5 or another universe, science fiction or fantasy, serious or humorous. In other word, anything from your imagination or someone else's is welcome on our stage.

Given Babylon 5's demonstration of "wearable futuristic clothing", we have a special category of completion. We will recognize costumes "constructed from your closet". This acknowledges the skill set of working with found objects. Create a "new" costume from pre-constructed garments and accessories that have lived in your closet, have been found at the thrift store, gleaned from a mail order catalogue, etc. These may be completely "bought" outfits or contain just a few items you've constructed yourself to accent your wonderful finds! Show us your imagination!

Write the convention address for the complete Masquerade contest rules or check out the web site. You may pre-register in advance or at AgamemCon until early Saturday afternoon. Time limits are basically 1 minute per 4 people. For special exceptions please contact the masquerade director. Skits must be by pre-registration since there are only a few spots available.

We will have a very appreciative audience that feels that a SF convention is not complete without the masquerade. So bring your best... and share with all!

Request for Masquerade Help: Do you want to help out behind the scenes? Don't want to be on stage... but still want to see the costumes up close? This is the place. Volunteer to help at the masquerade. Volunteer in advance, we'll help train you in advance. This is a great way to be up close and part of the costuming experience. We need people on all levels -- beginners to experienced staff, fans to theater people. No previous experience necessary. Please contact us in advance or at the con at the masquerade desk.

Hall Costumes!
Costumes always add extra fun to a convention. We welcome the wearing of costumes in the halls though out the convention. We will be handing out hall costume ribbons to recognize your efforts. Any time or universe is encouraged. Wearing your costume during the day, then come show it on stage to everyone at the Saturday night masquerade.

Make-up demo: Join us on Sunday for the return of Kim Ferry's hair and make-up demo where she will make up the lucky winner from Saturday's Penny Lane auction.
 

T-SHIRTS!!

This year we will be offering full color convention shirts! We are offering these as pre-sale items. Those who would like to order one can do so by sending $15 each to the convention address no later then May 22. Please specify your size and your name and address when ordering. We will have some available to be bought at the convention, but supplies will be limited. So, if you want to get one, order now. Advanced orders are guaranteed to get one!
 

FOOD:

Here we go again with the food...

We are going out of our way to provide everyone with the necessary means to obtain sustenance through out their weekend at AgamemCon. Sure, we will have our con suite back again this year, but what to do if you need real food, not just empty calories? This year, as they did last year, the hotel will be providing a lunch cart in the outdoor patio breeze way throughout the afternoon hours. This will be an opportunity to get a sandwich, mini pizza, hamburger, cheeseburger or hotdog, chips and soda for around five or six bucks. The hotel also has a brand new restaurant, The Daily Grill. It's all new, all fresh, and all flavorful. We have also hooked up with two local services to fetch the food for you. The first, Courier and Chives, offers delivery service from a wide variety of local area restaurants. With this service, there is a $5.00 delivery charge for all orders and a $15.00 food minimum per restaurant. They accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, and Discover. Our second delivery service is Food Fetchers. Food Fetchers charges a delivery fee of just $1.49 per person for all orders from menus contained in their booklet. Minimum food order is also $15.00. All food booklets, menus, detailed delivery info and telephone information will be at the Information/Food Desk in the convention center lobby. This will be the place you can tell your delivery service as a location for food drop off. And remember Domino's also delivers. In the immortal words of Loud Howard from the television show, Dilbert, "The food is gone! All the food...it's gone. It's all gone! The food is gone!"
 

MEET POINT ROOMS:

There will be two smaller meeting rooms set aside for clubs, associations, and groups to get together through-out the weekend. These rooms are in the east wing of the hotel tower, just across the patio breeze way from the convention center. Please let the convention staff know if you would like to use one of these break out rooms during the weekend so we can plan your times. These rooms hold anywhere from 20 to 30 people, ideal for your club get together.
 

M T & R:

The Museum of Television and Radio will be running a promotion in conjunction with our convention. The weekend of our con, the museum will be running science fiction television programming in their two large theaters. The Museum of Television & Radio is a nonprofit organization founded by William S. Paley in 1975 to collect and preserve television and radio programs and to make these programs available to the public. It's a really neat place to check out old television shows you thought you would never see again. Some of the programs from the sci-fi genre include Battlestar Galactica, Quantum Leap, Quark, VR.5, Red Dwarf, Dr. Who, and Space Patrol. The Museum of Television and Radio is located at 465 N. HOTEL INFO:

This year AgamemCon will be returning to the Hilton Burbank Airport and Convention Center. We have arranged for special room rates, parking discounts, food (more on that later), and other incentives.

Staying at the hotel will help the convention in a big way. Rather then going out and beating people over the head with this point, we have decided to put in a special flyer for the hotel giving you all the needed details.

But just to be sure, room rates are $89.00 for a single or double and $119.00 for a junior suite. Rates do not, of course, include tax. You can make your reservations (rates are good for the entire weekend as well as three days before and three days after the con) by calling the Hilton's toll-free number: 1 (800) HILTONS. That's 1-800-445-8667. Please remember to mention AgamemCon when making your reservations so that you get the special rates. Remember, staying at the hotel not only helps the con and increases the possibilities for future years, but it's also a good way to ensure not missing any of the fun and interesting events and activities that happen around the clock during the weekend!

TRAVEL:

We have arranged to have Capo Valley Travel as AgamemCon's official travel agent. VOLUNTEER INFO:

If you are interested in helping out at the convention and haven't had a chance to send in your volunteer form yet, it's not too late to help out. You can still send it in or sign up at the convention.
 

DEALERS ROOM:

The dealers room will be open all three days of the convention and will have all kinds of interesting items for sale. See the web site for a list of current dealers and what they have to offer. In some cases, if you have a special request they will be happy to bring it for you.

Friday: 11:00am - 6:00pm
Saturday: 10:00am - 6:00pm
Sunday: 10:00am - 4:00pm
 

REGISTRATION:

Convention Registration will be located in the lobby area of the convention center, right outside the entrance to the dealers room. When you arrive go there to get your badge (if you pre-registered) or to buy your membership on site.

Registration Hours:

Friday: 8:00am - 8:00pm
Saturday: 8:00am - 6:00pm
Sunday: 8:00am - 4:00pm

Registration will be open later on Friday night until 8 PM to accommodate those who are not able to attend all day on Friday but would like to attend the party and concert that night.
 

VIDEO/FILM ROOM:

Stop by and check out our video and film room which will be running from 8 AM on Friday morning until closing on Sunday. The room will close for a few hours late on Friday and Saturday nights. We have several items of interest this year including a Hong Kong Film Fest on Friday night and special anime videos courtesy of Urban Vision.
